(12/16/2011)  The Harris County Senior Companions ended 2011 with a great Annual Recognition Event and Holiday Luncheon.  Harris County Area Agency on Aging Director Deborah Moore recognized each volunteer with a beautiful certificate for their dedication and service to seniors in the Houston and Harris County community.  A wonderful group of ExxonMobil volunteers surprised the volunteers with $25.00 Wal-Mart gift cards and they also volunteered to serve lunch to the SCP volunteers and special guests.
Highlights are listed in chronological order.

Serving Harris County
(12/20/2011)  SCP Advisory Council Chair Ursula Chester presented each volunteer with a wonderful gift from the Home Instead Senior Services Santa Project.  Area churches that work with Home Instead Senior Care choose a volunteer and buy the gift they requested on their "Wish List" card.
(01/16/2012)  Our 2012 MLK celebration was very rewarding.  The SCP volunteers collected a record number of pull tabs for Ronald McDonald House.  This is the third year we've done this, and this is a project that all the volunteers can participate.  The pull tabs are donated to a very worthy program right here in the Houston community.  Two of our SCP Advisory Council representatives, Dat Pham and Rozan Colemon, presented the pull tabs to the Ronald McDonald House.  The second part of our celebration involved having SCP volunteers share what MLK Day means to them.  This year the volunteers voted that Dave Vu, Vietnamese Senior Citizens Center SCP volunteer, should be recognized for his reading of what MLK means to him.  Dave was presented with a $20.00 gift certificate.
(03/08/2012)  The US Department of Veterans Affairs National Voluntary Advisory Council has selected the SCP program sponsor, the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston, as its 2011 National "American Spirit Award" winner for outstanding community partnership.  This is a great honor for the ERJCC, and validates importance of the Senior Companions' 23 years of service to veterans in the Houston Harris County community.  Marilyn Vargiu will be travel to Charleston South Carolina in mid March to receive the award on behalf of the ERJCC.
