(10/19/2011) In light of all of the fires this summer in Deep East Texas, the Deep East Texas RSVP Advisory Council and volunteers participated in an area wide fundraising project for the 9/11 National Day of Service. In excess of $3,300.00 was raised to honor first responders (VFDs), in memory of those who served during 9/11. Water, Gatorade, and snack foods were also collected and distributed. All of the money and items received in each county, remained in that county. Ten of the twelve counties participated this year, with all twelve wanting to participate in future events. We received a lot of pre/post publicity, including newspaper and newscasts (KTRE). State Representative James White supported us in this project, as well.
The Deep East Texas RSVP volunteers and staff handed out CNCS produced postcards (public awareness), during the month of September, commemorating Senior Corps Week 2011. We asked all community members to make a special effort to thank senior volunteers during the week of September 19-23, and beyond. We did not do an event this year or last year, due to scheduling conflicts, but plan on using the week next year for a region wide (12 county) volunteer recognition event.
